Orthodontic treatment for children
Creating an environment for children that allows their self-confidence to grow is important, and their oral health should be included in this.
Why is early treatment important?
Establishing a good oral hygiene routine with children is essential for their overall health and well-being. Poor oral health can lead to further problems, such as digestive issues or gum disease, not to mention issues relating to their self-confidence if they’re embarrassed to smile.
At Smile Style Orthodontics, we adhere to the recommendations of the Australian Society of Orthodontics (ASO), and encourage all parents and caregivers to bring their children in for an early consultation by the age of seven.
A consultation at this age allows us to assess the state of their oral health and prepare for any treatment that may be needed as their teeth and jaws develop. It also enables them to get accustomed to the clinic environment and feel comfortable about sitting in the ‘dentist’s chair’!
Types of treatment for children
Although it is recommended that a child has an orthodontic consultation by the age of seven, this doesn’t necessarily mean treatment will begin immediately. If treatment is required, it’s likely to start in their teenage years, or prior to, unless they suffer from major orthodontic problems.
Both braces and Invisalign are suitable for children and teenagers and get great results. Invisalign is particularly popular among teenagers because the aligners are virtually invisible. They also come with a blue dot wear indicator so teens can track the length of time they’re wearing them, which, for best results, is 22 hours per day.
